Difference between Fat32, NTFS, and exFAT

Can someone explain to me a difference between Fat32, NTFS, and exFAT? I am about to install Windows 10 so tips and advices would be appreciated!

the main difference is about maximum file size and partition size

NT File System(NTFS)- it is windows default file system, max file size is 16TB it means that one time you can write on NTFS 16 TB capacity file
FAT32- maximum file size on one time write is 4GB
and exFAT- maximum file size is 16EB

FAT32 is the oldest file system here. It was introduced all the way back in Windows 95 to replace the older FAT16, up to 4GB partition

NTFS is the modern file system Windows likes to use. When you install Windows, it formats your system drive with the NTFS file system. NTFS has file size and partition size limits that are so theoretically huge you won’t run up against them, indefinite size limits.

exFAT designed to be a lightweight file system like FAT32 without all NTFS’s extra features and overhead, but without FAT32’s limitations.

NTFS is ideal for internal drives (especially to run Win10 Installation), while exFAT is generally ideal for flash drives. However, you may sometimes need to format an external drive with FAT32 if exFAT isn’t supported on a device you need to use it with.

FAT stands for file allocation table. It is oldest file system in windows operating system fat32 advanced version of fat it supports maximum 32 GB partition and ex fat is advanced version of fat32 . It was introduced in xp and NTFS file system used by default in windows 10. It support file level security so it is best for your solution

If you want to install windows 10, you can only use NTFS partition. Since Windows Vista, you can only install an operating system to NTFS drives. but the bootable media Eg : Pendrive, should be in a Fat32 or exFAT format because UEFI system cant boot from NTFS.

Whenever you want to install windows 10 make these changes

  1. Use GPT partition style to create bootable media
  2. Boot the installation media in UEFI mode in order to install Windows 10

If you are using Legacy mode you can’t exceed your partition size more than 2TB so use UEFI mode to Install windows 10
