We have an overspeced W2016 server and we want to keep it when upgrading to W2019.
We have always installed a new OS on to new hardware and binned the previous server because it was end of life.
Is there a way to safely upgrade from W2016 to W2019 over the top?

You can do so, but make sure before doing this you take the backup of all data.
Please be sure before doing this on main Server, you can do
this on virtual environment so it will be easy for you
and it would be experience for you also.
It can be done as tjnhal says.
Iām sure you know to have a good backup in place first.
I would recommend cloning the server for an easier restore and Acronis have great products for this.
